Cover Up: The Dispossessed by Ursula Le Guin

It has been awhile since I did one of these! Not sure why but all the sudden yesterday I really felt in the mood to design a book cover. I chose The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin because it is one of my favorite books. I am terrible at writing plot summaries - so here is the blurb from the back cover:

Shevek, a brilliant physicist, decides to take action. he will seek answers, question the unquestionable, and attempt to tear down the walls of hatred that have isolated his planet of anarchists from the rest of the civilized universe. To do this dangerous task will mean giving up his family and possibly his life. Shevek must make the unprecedented journey to the utopian mother planet, Urras, to challenge the complex structures of life and living, and ignite the fires of change.

For this design I wanted to represent the two opposing worlds by using this gradient of warm into cool. The two worlds depicted are completely different in their culture and government - but our protagonist does not fit in to either extreme - in my design this is represented by the purple created by the two opposing colors.  For this cover I wanted to keep things minimal to mimic Le Guin's own spare writing style.

I would really recommend this book - it is a great read and touches on so many important issues (gender issues, capitalism, communism, authority and the concepts of personal freedom and choice). Very thought provoking!
